Flounder fishing information & tips for North Devon

Flounder - Average size 1 to 2 pounds. Excellent fish to eat when caught fresh. The estuaries of Taw & Torridge rivers are good spots but very fast flowing.

Fish Type:

Flounder

Time of Year to catch Flounder:

All year round except for February and March when the fish move out to sea to spawn. Best months are December and January.

Hot Locations:

Barnstaple, Fremington Quay, Bideford, Crow beach and Appledore.

Baits:

Peeler crab, ragworm, lugworm & occasionally on small strips of squid or Mackerel.

Best Time to catch:

Flood tides or on the sandy area on a high tide. Not worth fishing for after heavy rains as the fresh water kills the fishing.

Top tip:

Use light tackle for real thrills. Crab is the best bait and Instow is a hot spot for catching lots of Flounder. Fish the ebb of a neap tide down to low water from behind the cricket ground for best results.
